Northeast Electrification and Decarbonization Alliance
Transition Accelerator (Canada)
Eight separately operated balancing areas make up the eastern Canadian and northeastern US electric grid. Under the aegis of the Northeast Electrification and Decarbonization Alliance (NEDA), the Transition Accelerator, in collaboration with the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) and Raab Associates, conducted a detailed assessment to evaluate whether sufficient institutional support exists in key jurisdictions for an extended multi-stakeholder, multi-jurisdictional collaborative process to take place. The primary focus of such a collaborative would be on ways that greater eastern U.S. and Canada electricity system and market integration and coordination could facilitate decarbonization efforts on both sides of the border. The collaborative process would investigate where joint action may offer the most promise and best return for the broad set of affected institutions and stakeholders and would be dedicated to developing a comprehensive blueprint for coordination among the regional electrical systems. The NEDA process included a high-level joint U.S. and Canadian steering committee. See the Final Assessment below.
